In January of 2022 I wanted to read the Bible in a year, so on New Year’s Day I started a chronological reading plan. And this year on January 31st 2024, 25 months later, and a little off track from my initial plan, I finally finished the Old Testament.
Because I kept going.
Obviously, it took me much longer than I anticipated just to get this far. I will admit that at times I wasn’t as dedicated as I had hoped I would be, and would sometimes go weeks without reading.
But I kept going.
When I kept losing the web version of the reading plan I had on my phone, I decided to just print it out so I could mark off each day and section as I finished it. But the printed version of the reading plan was so small I couldn’t read it, so I got reading glasses.
And I kept going.
I used a study Bible (which I HIGHLY recommend) that gave deeper insight, meaning, and explanation to the verses. But this meant that the reading would sometimes get slower, deeper, and take a little “investigative detour”.
But I kept going.
I’ll admit that some of it got boring and repetitive. Reading chronologically meant jumping around a lot, which slowed things down a little.
But I kept going.
And now, 2 years and 1 month after I started my 1 year reading plan, I can say that I have read the entire Old Testament, even though it took me much longer than I wanted.
Because I kept going.
Now, I will start reading the New Testament (also chronologically). I do not know how long it will take. Maybe I will finish it this year, or it may take another 2 years. And when I am done, I may just turn back to the beginning and start over.
But I will keep going.
